Beverly and Jerome Fine Summer Research Fellowship

Program Description

Each year, first year medical students are invited to apply for the Beverly and Jerome Fine Summer Research Fellowship program. Selected students will receive a stipend of $3600 to support research opportunities at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. The project must be a minimum of 8 weeks in length and the proposed project objectives or intended outcome must be achievable within that time frame. Projects must be discovery/inquiry-based research projects, such as retrospective clinical research, basic science mechanistic studies, randomized clinical trials or education research. Projects may be conducted either under the mentorship of faculty of Sinai Hospital or at Sinai Hospital (or affiliated Baltimore community sites) with a mentor from the GW faculty.


Student Eligibility

Eligible Students

  • First year GW medical students who intend to complete their third and fourth years of medical school at the RMC at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.  
  • Good academic standing (the award is contingent upon the student’s good academic standing throughout the duration of the accepted program)

Non-Eligible Students

  • Students who have previously received SMHS summer program funding
  • Students accepting any other scholarships or fellowships for their proposed summer program
  • Students with no affiliation to the RMC

 Selection Criteria

A committee of reviewers will be evaluating your project proposal according to the following criteria:

Project

  • Describes goal or question, measurable objectives and research hypothesis
  • Provides feasible timeframe and breakdown of activities.
  • Impact on field will be meaningful

Educational Value

  • Student role makes it likely objectives will be achieved
  • Student role in data analysis or biostatistics
  • Impact on the healthcare community
  • The project will further the students educational and career goals

Mentor Support

  • Mentor research experience
  • Strong plan for supervision/training

Student

  • Demonstrates interest in research
  • Student involvement in developing the project

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Completed application form
  • Brief project description of no more than 3 pages that includes the following:
    • Project Description
      • Brief background and overview of the project
      • Main question and primary hypothesis to be tested
      • Measurable objectives  
      • Project structure and timeline
    • Educational/Scientific value
      • Your role in developing the project
      • Impact your project will have on the healthcare community
      • How the project will further your educational and career goals
    • Personal Statement
      • Your personal interest in the project
      • Past experience (if any) related to the project
    • Mentor Support
      • The role the mentor will play in helping to achieve the project objectives
      • Plans for meetings and project oversight by the mentor
  • Verification of acceptance from the mentor – provided on letterhead or in an email from the mentor that includes:
    • Specific information regarding the project
    • Supervision structure
    • Student responsibilities
  • Mentor’s CV
  • Applicant’s CV
  • IRB approval letter (if applicable) 

Reporting Requirements

  • An abstract describing the project due by October 1 (includes title, authors, methods, results, statistical analysis and conclusions)
  • A poster (created in PowerPoint or other program) that can be used for Research Days or other professional meetings
  • A presentation for a group which may include donors, members of the Dean’s office, or other students and faculty
