Description

This clerkship is designed to introduce the third-year medical student to the diagnosis and management of common obstetric and gynecologic conditions. Students will have the opportunity to develop basic skills related to the female reproductive system. Each student will gain an understanding of the management of many typical medical and surgical problems that occur from birth to puberty and through menopause.

Clerkship Learning Objectives:

At the end of this clerkship, the student should be able to:

  1. Perform a complete and accurate obstetric history.
  2. Perform a complete, accurate Gynecologic history. 
  3. Perform a complete pelvic examination. 
  4. Apply knowledge to life-threatening complications of Obstetrics and Gynecology. 
  5. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviors related to the female patient and other healthcare professionals. 
  6. Apply the knowledge of reproductive physiology, pharmacology, pelvic anatomy and epidemiology to health and disease in female patients. 
  7. Perform a simulated or real vaginal delivery. 
  8. Perform a complete breast examination. 
  9. Demonstrate the development of a differential diagnosis work-up and treatment plan. 
  10. Demonstrate the ability to present a case in an oral and written format. 
  11. Demonstrate effective communication with patients and their families. 
  12. Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning through inquiry and reflective practice.
