Description	The purpose of the psychiatry clerkship is to facilitate the development of the clinical skills, knowledge and professional behaviors that students need in order to evaluate and care for patients with psychiatric conditions in inpatient and outpatient settings, under supervision. This is a required 6 week clerkship for third year medical students focusing on the supervised examination, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric patients at Sinai Hospital. There are case conferences, seminars on psychiatric referral, psychiatric drugs, and community resources, standardized patient experiences, and an emphasis on psychiatry in primary care practice. Additional Notes	Clerkship Learning Objectives: At the end of this clerkship, the student should be able to: Demonstrate the understanding of psychiatric diagnoses in DSM 5. Demonstrate the ability to elicit a complete psychiatric history. Perform a mental status exam. Demonstrate the development of differential diagnosis, work-up, and treatment plan. Recognize life threatening and other serious complications of psychiatric conditions. Demonstrate the ability to present a psychiatric case in oral format. Demonstrate effective communication with patients and their families. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviors related to the patients and other health care professionals. Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning through inquiry and reflective practice. See syllabus for additional details.
