Clinical Hematology and Oncology

This rotation is generally a four-week, structured clinical experience under direct supervision designed to provide the student experience diagnosing, treating and caring for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions.

• Students will participate in the clinical evaluation and management of patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
• Students will see both new and follow-up patients on the inpatient hematology or oncology consult service and make rounds with the consult team.
• Students will have the opportunity to observe bone marrow biopsies, intrathecal chemotherapy delivery and pheresis procedures.
• Students will be expected to attend Hematology/Oncology Virtual Grand Rounds on Friday at 8:00AM, and any other relevant conferences that may come up.
• Students will also be expected to give brief topical presentations during rounds as assigned by the attending physician. 

Faculty includes members of the George Washington University Department of Hematology and Oncology.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Practice basic skills in obtaining a history and performing a physical exam with emphasis on hematologic or oncologic conditions.
2. Recognize indications for appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests for hematologic or oncologic conditions.
3. Identify common clinical presentations, evaluation, staging and management of hematologic or oncologic conditions. 
4. Demonstrate familiarity with ancillary diagnostic procedures (bone marrow biopsies).
