Description

This is a required clerkship for 3rd or 4th year students. The purpose of this course is to provide clinical experiences in neuroscience. During this 4-week rotation, students will have two 2-week blocks and each block may be spent at a different site. Choices will include adult neurology and pediatric neurology and neurosurgery sites, and will include both outpatient and inpatient experiences. There is a common didactic experience for this clerkship, allowing students to meet and have a shared curriculum. This curriculum will include sessions covering the neurological examination, coma examination, clinical localization, lumbar puncture/fundoscopy simulation, stroke, dementia, movement disorders, headache, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders, case discussion sessions, and related topics.

Clerkship Learning Objectives:

At the end of this clerkship, the student should be able to:

  1. Perform a thorough neurological exam.
  2. Perform a complete history, obtaining all pertinent details.
  3. Perform a concise oral presentation and/or written note.
  4. Identify important neurologic deficits, symptom complexes and disorders.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to make an appropriate differential diagnosis based on the localization, time course, and relevant historical and demographic information.
  6. Interpret diagnostic tests that are ordered to evaluate patients who present with neurologic abnormalities.
  7. Apply appropriate management strategies to identify neurological diagnoses.
  8. Identify urgent neurologic problems including altered mental status, stroke, status epilepticus, and acute weakness.
  9. Perform a lumbar puncture and fundoscopy.
  10. Use biomedical information resources and evidence-based medicine.
  11. Demonstrate effective communication with patients and their families.
  12. Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, dependability and integrity in all professional activities.
