Conferences, lectures, and attendance at dermatology clinic where patients with wide variety of dermatoses are seen: diagnosis and treatment of common and rare skin disorders, dermatologic surgery procedures, technique for using liquid nitrogen, culture and identification of fungi, and microscopic diagnosis of common cutaneous diseases. Part of the elective will be spent with the Pediatric Dermatology Division at the K Street office of Children's National. Faculty includes: Drs. Adam Friedman, Ilana DeLuca, Vishal Patel, Karl Saardi, and Yasmine Kirkorian. All VSLO students must take a 4 week elective. Students considering dermatology residency should also request the 4 week elective.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Describe skin conditions or lesions with appropriate dermatologic terminology.
  2. Perform focused history-taking and physical examination for dermatology patients of varying ages, diagnoses, and complexity.
  3. Demonstrate effective oral and written case presentation skills suitable for dermatology patients.
  4. Describe the approach to an evidence-based assessment and treatment plan for patients with common and rare skin conditions.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviors related to dermatology patients and other healthcare professionals.
