Description

Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes

Course description: This is a 2- or 4-week course designed to give students experience in assessment and management of patients typically encountered in pediatric endocrinology under direct supervision.

Students will work directly with pediatric endocrinologists and nurses in the outpatient setting. This includes observation and supervised patient interactions in outpatient offices at Sinai and satellite locations. Students will learn to the management of common pediatric endocrine conditions such as diabetes (type 1, type 2 and atypical), thyroid disease, disorders of growth and pubertal development, adrenal disorders, pituitary disease and metabolic bone disorders, among others. This course will introduce students to technology commonly utilized in diabetes management. Students will learn through supervised patient encounters to obtain a focused history, conduct an appropriate physical exam, interpret clinical and laboratory findings and develop an assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic plan for pediatric patients presenting with endocrine concerns.

Course Learning Objectives:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the pathophysiology and basic evaluation and management of common pediatric endocrine conditions such as diabetes (type 1, type 2 and monogenic), thyroid disease, early and late puberty, short stature, adrenal disorders and pituitary hormone deficiencies.


2. Perform a focused history and physical exam of pediatric patients with concern for an underlying endocrine diagnosis. 


3. Interpret clinical findings and laboratory results on patients presenting to the
pediatric endocrine practice. 


4. Develop an assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic plan for pediatric patients
presenting with concern for an endocrinopathy. 


5. Compose medical notes on for select patients that are organized, appropriately
detailed and endocrine-focused.
